The Republic of Lebanon is a parliamentary republic in Middle East. The capital is Beirut. The country is still dealing with the economic challenge of recovery from its long civil war. Since 1973, Lebanon has been in a state of war with Israel. The average GDP is $17.82 billion (2003 est.). The major export products are authentic jewelry, inorganic chemicals, miscellaneous consumer goods, fruit, tobacco, construction minerals, electric power machinery and switchgear, textile fibers, and paper. Lebanon's main trade partners are UAE, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia , US, Jordan, Italy, France, and Germany. The predominant religion in Lebanon is Muslim (including Shia, Sunni, Druze, Isma'ilite, Alawite or Nusayri), therefore, a majority of traditional Muslim holidays will be celebrated by a majority of the population. Most major credit cards are accepted. It is advisable to inquire with your financial institution regarding credit card acceptability. Travelers checks have a limited acceptability. Travelers checks may take up to two weeks to clear and are not recommended. There are no restrictions on the import or export of either local or foreign currency.
