Ukraine - Travel Report

$5.95

Ukraine is a young nation undergoing profound political and economic change as it moves from its Soviet past towards a market economy and integrates into Western institutions. The capital is Kiev. The average GDP of the Ukraine is $256.5 billion (2003 est.). The primary products of the Ukraine are grain, sugar, sunflower seeds and metals. Credit cards are not generally accepted. The major trade partners are Russia, Turkey, Italy, Germany, and Turkmenistan. Ukraine is a cash economy. When bringing U.S. dollars into the country ensure that they are in good condition otherwise they may not be accepted. Although credit cards are gaining a wider acceptance, scams are becoming more prevalent. Travelers are advised to avoid using personal checks, credit cards or ATM cards if at all possible. If one must use these as means of payment, it is recommended to use them at an established and recognized place of business. Travelers checks are not recommended, and they are rarely accepted. Exchanging U.S. dollars into Ukrainian currency or other currencies is legal only at banks, currency exchange desks at hotels, and licensed exchange booths; anyone caught dealing on the black market can expect to be detained by the local militia. Funds may be transferred by wire; advances may be drawn on credit cards and travelers checks may be cashed at many locations.
