Latvia is currently in a midst of an economic transition. The capital is Riga. Many of the goods and services taken for granted in other countries are not yet available outside Riga. The average GDP of Latvia is $23.77 billion (2003 est.). The primary products of Latvia are fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, electronics, processed foods, textiles, grain, and potatoes. The primary trading partners of Latvia are Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia and Sweden. There are several religious denomination in Latvia: Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Russian Orthodox, therefore, the majority of the population observes traditional Christian holidays. Most major credit cards are accepted; however, it is advisable to inquire with your financial institution regarding acceptability. U.S. currency that is crumpled, torn, discolored or defaced may not be accepted by exchange facilities. Exchange facilities and banks may charge a processing fee depending upon the size of the transaction. ATMs are widely available in Riga and in other major towns. There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. 1-800 numbers cannot be accessed from Latvian phone lines. Local Internet cafes offer computer access, and fax machines are widely available.
