Albania is the poorest and least developed country in Europe. The capital is Tirana. Most facilities for tourism are not well developed and services taken for granted in others European countries are not available. The average GDP is $16.13 billion (2003 est.). The main export commodities are textiles and footwear; asphalt, metals and metallic ores, crude oil; vegetables, fruits, and tobacco. The major trade partners are Italy, Greece, Germany, and Turkey. The predominant religion in Albania is Muslim so most of the traditional Muslim holidays are observed by the majority of the Albanian population. Albania is a cash economy. Travelers checks and credit cards are not generally accepted, except at the major new hotels in Tirana and some international airline offices. Travelers' checks can be changed at banks in larger towns. It is advisable to inquire with your financial institution regarding acceptability.
