Taiwan is a stable democracy and it has a strong and well-developed economy. The capital is Taipei. The average GDP is $528.6 billion (2003 est.). The primary products of Taiwan are electronics, computer products, chemicals, petrochemicals, metals, plastics, rice, fruit and pork. The main markets for Taiwanese products are the United States and Hong Kong. The religion of Taiwan is mixture of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. A small segment of the population is Christian. Credit cards are accepted at most major establishments; however it is advisable to inquire with your financial institution regarding acceptability. All travelers entering the country are required by law to make a currency declaration in writing. Currency that was not used during the stay can be reconverted upon departure, if the exchange receipts can be produced. Taiwan is subject to strong earthquakes that can occur anywhere on the island. Taiwan is also hit by typhoons, usually from July to October.
