Zimbabwe is a developing landlocked country in southern Africa. The capital city is Harare. The average GDP of Zimbabwe is $24.03 billion (2003 est.). The primary exports are tobacco, gold, and textiles. The major export partners of Zimbabwe are the European Union, South Africa, Japan and the United States. The primary imports of Zimbabwe are machinery, transport equipment, chemicals and fuels. The predominant import partners of Zimbabwe are South Africa, the European Union and the United States. The predominant religion in Zimbabwe is Syncretic, which is a mixture of Christian and indigenous beliefs, therefore, a large portion of the population will observe traditional Christian holidays. Under Executive Order 13288 of March 7, 2003, the United States placed sanctions on the property and economic assets of certain Zimbabwean government officials deemed most responsible for undermining Zimbabwe ’s democratic institutions. U.S. citizens intending to engage in business or financial transactions in Zimbabwe are advised to consult the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control website at http://www.treas.gov/ofac for up-to-date information on these sanctions.
