Zambia is a developing country in southern Africa. The capital is Lusaka. The average GDP is $8.596 billion (2003 est.). The major export commodities are copper, cobalt, electricity, tobacco, flowers, and cotton. The main trade partners are South Africa, Malawi, Thailand, Japan, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, China, Egypt, and Netherlands. The predominant religion in Zambia is Christian; therefore, a majority of the population will observe traditional Christian holidays. Most major credit cards are accepted in well-known establishments, although it may be advisable to inquire with your financial institution regarding credit card acceptability in Zambia. Zambian banks and bureaus de change do not accept dollar notes issued before 1990. American travelers can withdraw money (in local currency) from ATMs in major cities in Zambia using their ATM cards or credit cards from the United States. U.S. traveler checks are easy to cash provided you have identification and the original receipt to prove you are the person who purchased the travelers checks. Travelers are advised that, even in the most serene settings, wild animals can pose a threat to life and safety.
